Contact with Election Candidates

On 27th March we emailed all main candidates for the Streatham constituency (Amna Ahmed, Jonathan Bartley and Chuka Umunna) to ask how they could help in the campaign to fix the High Trees lighting. All endorsed our campaign, this is what they said

Amna Ahmed from the Liberal Democrats responded as follows

I am appalled to hear that Metropolitan has not responded to your most recent requests to have lights fixed on the estate. I noticed this was an issue when I campaigned to be councillor for Tulse Hill in June-July 2013. Residents told me about it then and it appears that little has changed. When change has happened, it is only temporary and this is become a serious concern for residents. Councillors need to be proactive in liaising with the TRA and Metropolitan so the scale of the problem is understand. Lighting is critical for safety and good community living.

Jonathan Bartley from the Green Party responded as follows

I have just seen your tweet of a few minutes ago, saying you had asked me for help. I am afraid that as your email of 27th March was addressed “Dear Chuka”, and specifically only asked him for help, it was not clear to me that you wanted a response from everyone else who was copied in as well. My apologies.

I would of course be very glad to help in whatever way I can. You have clearly been let down over the lighting and very badly treated.

As Chuka has been dealing with the situation until now, perhaps I could come down to meet you and some other residents and you can explain the situation fully and its history? We can then decide together what the best course of action will be and how I can most effectively support and help you?

(Bartley subsequently came to the general meeting on 28th April to discuss this. We hope to have minutes of this meeting soon)

Chuka Umunna from the Labour Party responded as follows

Thank you for your email updating me on the situation with St Martins, and apologies for the delay in responding to you. It’s certainly very concerning to hear that some of the fixed lights are out again, and that some blocks are still without sufficient (or any) lights, despite the progress made earlier in the year.

I have followed up your email with Brian Johnson, and will be in touch as soon as I have any updates from his office. You also mention that you are pursuing this matter through MHT’s complaints process, and if you would like any assistance with this (for example if responses are not forthcoming) then please let me know and I would be happy to chase these up on the TRA’s behalf.

I will contact you as soon as I receive a response from Metropolitan. Please do keep me updated with the situation on the estate, and if there’s anything further assistance you think may be helpful.

(Metropolitan subsequently responded to Umunna’s complaint. You can see their response here)

If you’d like to help out with the campaign, or have some ideas about how to take it further, please contact us
