Thames Water are offering to install water meters. If you live in a single storey flat we recommend you accept. This will almost certainly lead to a reduction in your bill
If Thames Water have not attempted to install a water meter please contact them to request one. If you’re a Southern Housing resident they should already have been in touch with you. MTVH and NHG residents will need to contact Thames Water directly
Contact Thames Water, request a water meter
If Thames Water can see it is not possible to install a water meter they will put you on an Assessed Household Charge. This varies from £536 a year for a single occupier to £700 for a three bedroom property. If you live on your own you should ask for a single occupier charge regardless of the number of bedrooms you have. Check your current water bill but this is likely to be cheaper than what you are paying now.
We know it is not possible to install water meters in the following blocks. We believe it is not possible to install water meters in any single storey flat on the estate
- Baldwin House
- Burnell House
- Gaywood Close 98 – 121
- Hamers House
- Hart House
- Maskall Close
- Sheppard House
- Worthington House
The situation with two storey properties (maisonettes) is more complicated. We know it is possible to install water meters in the following blocks
- 52 – 75 Gaywood Close
- 113 – 171 Abbots Park
We’ve heard from a resident of a maisonette in Challice Way that it is not possible to install a water meter in his property. We’d really appreciate more feedback
If Thames Water have tried and failed to install a water meter check your bill anyway. You should pay no more than the following (source). If you pay more please contact Thames Water. Also ask them to backdate any refund (they will only backdate the refund if they’ve known your property was unmeterable for some time and have had you on the wrong tariff for that time)
| Number of bedrooms | Annual Cost |
| Single person (regardless of how many bedrooms) | £535.79 |
| 0-1 bedrooms | £606.58 |
| 2 bedrooms | £639.16 |
| 3 bedrooms | £700.30 |
This work is saving residents money
- Terry said “I have contacted Thames Water and they will put me onto the single occupier tariff of £318.33 for this year, and they will see if it can be back-dated for three years. So, thanks to the residents association for its campaign on water rates. By comparing information I was able to get the deduction”
- Esther says “Thames Water were unable to do fix a water meter as our flat is served by two different water supplies. They gave informed me that my bill for 2 bedroom single occupier will go down from £591.60 to £318.33 per year. This makes a big difference to my income. I really appreciate the support you have given us.
- Malusa said “Great information re Thames Water, I had no idea. We are currently paying approximately £50 a month so nearly £600 a year for a 2 bedroom flag with only 2 residents”
We’d really appreciate feedback on how Thames Water responds. If you have any feedback please contact us.
